We were flying S-40's (very small balloons)back in the late 60's.  The tops were shrinking and we couldn't understand why.  The solution was,

"Get the duct tape!"  We were flying with 3 or 4 people, and didn't know any better.  We were obviously flying very hot and this is what was causing the tops to shrink.
