Members of the Balloon Federation of America are shocked and saddened after hearing news of a 16 person fatal hot-air-balloon accident in Lockhart, Texas.

"Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the people involved" said BFA President Dean Carlton.  "The hot air balloon community is a small community, and news like this is hard to hear."

The BFA will not comment about the specifics of the accident, since it's currently under a National Transportation and Safety Board investigation.  "Obviously we're still in shock and trying to process this" said Carlton. "The BFA will fully cooperate with any investigative authority. We anticipate learning anything we can, and using it to improve an impressive safety record."

Nothing is more important to BFA members than the safety of our passengers and crew.  "As pilots ourselves, we ask questions about safety every day.  I would urge everyone to pause, take a deep breath and avoid speculation right now."

"We are eagerly monitoring news and official reports from the scene. I am sure there will be more to say in the coming days," said Carlton.
